Stockmans Reward Campground

3713, Eildon
Victoria, Australia

This is one of the larger campgrounds in the Upper Big River State Forest, suitable for group camping and small caravans.
This campground is one of the main (read popular) campgrounds in this area and can get quite busy during holidays. The site is suitable for group camping (and is quite often used for that). There are plenty of well shaded, flat campsites with sites marked out with their own fireplaces. There is access to the River and being near where the Arnold creek enters the Big River, this spot looks promising for fishing. Thanks to Peter for the following updates. The most formal, developed of the Upper Big River sites. A reasonably sized flat at the junction of the Arnold Creek and Big River. Dispersed, designated, fenced parking sites each with a BBQ and tent space. All sites are level and most are separated by bush and fenced rejuvenation areas. All are well shaded by Mountain Ash and Blackwood, backed by steep forested slopes. Most sites can be glimpsed from the low use forestry road. Rated 4.2/5 Wrens, tree climbers, kookaburras and wallabies are common. The Yarra Track, the original access route to the Woods Point goldfields, crossed the Big River at Stockmans Crossing (later renamed Stockmans Reward after gold was found). Alluvial gold mining attracted many prospectors after the 1850s. Deep lead mining was carried out nearby. A large dredge operated here in the 1920s. Popular at peak periods.
This campsite is in Big River State Forest (Upper) The gem in this state forest is the heritage classified Big River, however with many kilometers of forest roads, it is a great spot for car/4wd based exploring. More Information...
