I journeyed a great distance along this path and merely encountered two locations. It's not impressive. It's clear that they aren't keen on individuals camping off-grid in this area, despite the potential it holds due to the stunning scenery.

An excellent spot for free camping on state trust land, with a yearly fee of $21 for a 14-day family permit. The winter rains have created a lush green landscape in the Sonoran desert, filled with teddy bear and buckthorn cholla, saguaro, fish hook barrel cactus, and more. The campsites are generally well-maintained, although some campers don't clean up after themselves as they should. The trails haven't been too crowded and are suitable for hiking and off-road ATV and jeep adventures. We have a large vehicle (61 feet when connected), so we only parked about half a mile from Highway 79. We noticed larger vehicles venturing further off the beaten path to discover secluded spots, so it's worth exploring. There are multiple campsites stretching at least 6 miles along East 96 Ranch Road. We checked out several other areas within 30 miles north (Perallta Road, Gold Canyon, East Cottonwood), but none could match the breathtaking views and solitude offered here. Cell service is limited, but with starlink, you can enjoy good internet speeds and wifi calling under the open sky. The area is rich in history, including the Tom Mix Memorial, located 2.5 miles to the south, and the old 96 Ranch homestead (which is privately owned). We'll definitely return! For waste disposal and water refill services, head about 10 miles north to the Rancho Sonora RV Park, where they charge a $20 dumping fee or a daily full hookup fee of $45.

Perfect spot to spend one night after long day of travel. There is a cost of $21 for the year to access Arizona State Lands and get the permit but no one came by to check ours for the night we stayed here. Being so close to the highway you have the expected road noise until late in the evening then it dies down. We stayed in the first spot on the left just as you entered the cattle guard. It was level and easy in and out. We did not drive any further down the main road. Spotty Verizon reception, one or two bars intermittently at most.
