We stayed a couple of nights in order to visit the Katahdin area and found the campground to be not real big rig-friendly. Our site required parallel parking to get into it which was doable. The problem is that other large trailers that don’t really fit into their sites have been told that it’s fine to block the road. This makes getting in/ out of your site very difficult. Also, the interior roads are not one-way, so you run the risk of encountering a rig going the other way at checkout time with absolutely no room to pass.

Summary: Scary for families. Overall it’s an aging campground with a hostile owner. Lots of better options in the surrounding area. Details: The campground itself is fairly primitive and set in the forest. There’s no sewer in individual sites but there is a dump station. E/W connections are on the left, so if you have a pull-in like a class C it’s no issue. If you’re bringing a tow behind you will need 50’-75’ of hose and power line to hookup. There’s no Wi-Fi but Verizon is 3 bars LTE and I had ~50MBPS speed for work. The bathrooms/showers/laundry are all in one shed that lacks completed floor to ceiling walls so between the mens, womens, and laundry area you will experience all your private business as a shared community. Laundry is coin based, there is only one unit for the campground, and the dryer doesn’t function. I suppose aging would be a more accurate description than primitive. I’ve attached photos for reference. That being said, this campground can be a scary experience for families and we don’t recommend coming here. There are several reviews about the owner’s disposition and they are accurate. The owner, Marcellus, is unnecessarily aggressive and indiscriminately hostile with guests, including with children. I didn’t meet the owner upon check-in, my first interaction occurred when I was lounging at my campsite (#2) when a short stout fellow pulled up in a 4wheeler at our site and began verbally assailing me about how he’s gotten several complaints about my speeding. It was confusing what he was trying to address as I’d not been driving at all that day, it’d only been a few nights since we’d showed up to begin with, this was my first time hearing about an issue, and he didn’t introduce himself prior to launching into an emotionally driven tirade so at that moment it’s just a stranger at my site. But hey, in all humility if my wife was inadvertently rushing somewhere while I was lounging at the campsite so be it, we’re always open to correction and appreciate strict rule adherence. I walked over and apologized on her behalf and the guy became more aggressive, had slurred speech, and threw out some comically awkward one liners such as “you got a problem?” “something funny?” and “what are you smiling at?”. When I attempted to diffuse the situation because the guy was emotionally compromised, and my children are staring at him, he rolled into threatening to eject us from the park. This was all in front of my 5, 7, and 9 y/o children. I was too uncomfortable letting my children outside without persistent and direct supervision because of Marcelleus. My children expressed the same level of discomfort being here. We left ASAP and didn’t bother asking for a refund, just went to another campground as there are several options in the surrounding area. I didn’t want my children to have further exposure to the owner. But as a parent I was able to use the verbal engagement with the owner as a coaching example for my kids about effectively dealing with emotionally unstable people. Mental health is a growing national issue and I really hope he’s ok, it’s been a rough couple years for everyone and we did feel bad for him. But this certainly isn’t a place for children to experience a positive environment.

I was humiliated by the woman running the show on my visit last summer. I was not going to write a review, but after reading the last one, I felt that people should know that this poor treatment has been repeated. I made the terrible mistake of going down the wrong road to find my campsite. She came tearing down the narrow road after me in her truck to berate me for several minutes for not checking in first. This was my first experience at a campground in Maine, and I was used to other places where I would go to the site first, then return to the office to complete the check-in procedure. In a mean and condescending tone, she instructed me to return to the office to check in. She continued in this manner throughout the process, marking X's on the map and saying "No! No! No!" at the road where I turned and should not have done so, while showing me where my site was. I would have left but I had nowhere else to go and I had already paid for two nights. I made a mistake that should have been forgivable, but she treated me like I had ruined her day and that I was a horrible person. There are negative reviews for this place on other sites, but I opted to give it a chance. That was my first mistake. A good option in the area is Pine Grove Campground and Cottages in Medway. It's close to Katahdin Woods and Waters NM and is a simple, peaceful site on the river. The people were kind and helpful and I had a very nice experience on two different visits during the week.

We've never experienced a campground like this before. We worked for 45 minutes to try and level our class c, but it just wasn't happening. Our site was un-level side to side, and front-to-back. Our front tires were hanging 18" off the ground. We approached the front to see if they had any other spots available. The lady was friendly, but her husband was not. He proceeded to argue with us, saying that in 9 years he's never had anyone not be able to get level, and that our spot was the most level spot in the campground. Again, our front tires were 18" off the ground. He then told me "you're doing something wrong." At this point I realized there was no point in even continuing the discussion. We walked away, spent the weekend, then left and lost out on the rest of the week. I would advise not coming here. Our family did not feel safe, compounded by the fact that (and other Google reviews verify this) the owners and at least one group of people here were all carrying handguns.

Our stay with Wilderness Edge was very peaceful. Our site was good sized, and they didn’t need the road it was on to have access from the other direction so we were able to use the road as part of the site too. With that it felt huge! Camp hosts and employees were very friendly. The grounds were well kept and clean. There was only one washer/dryer in the laundry room so we ended up going to town for laundry. There’s plenty to do in the surrounding area with Mt Katahdin near by. We’d definitely stay here again.
