I recently visited this location and found the entrance locked. I proceeded approximately one mile further to a snow-park car park, where camping is allowed at no cost. It's located near a river and a pond, and there's a restroom available. It's puzzling that camping is permitted here, but a local resident confirmed it. He also informed me that the dispersed site is currently inaccessible due to heavy snow and subsequent melting. I'm eager to return and explore Hope Valley Dispersed, as it's a fantastic area for hiking and off-roading. NOTE: The area has three bars of Verizon LTE, with 15mg download and upload speed. AT&T, however, does not provide internet service here.

Easy access off 88 not far from 89. Paved, very quiet, plenty of level paved parking with restrooms, great Verizon and views. 14 days posted stay limit. No dump or utilities.

Great Spot. A Bit Noisy From The Nearby Highway, But Does Down At Night. Lots To Do In The area. Felt Safe. Lots Of 4x4s So Expect Some Noise From That Too. Markleeville Is The Closest Supplies We Found.

Super easy to find and there were quite a few spaces for people to park and camp. We arrived on a Wednesday so the place wasn’t too busy. More people showed up as the weekend got closer. ATT had no service here

Closed from Jan 14, 2022 - April 30, 2022 for the season. However there is a small dirt “parking lot” directly in front of the locked gate. I stayed there for the night. I’m writing this before morning- so not sure if I’ll get the knock and tell me to move- but as of right now- there are no signs here that say you can’t stay overnight. Too bad too- looks like a gorgeous spot worthy of 5 stars. Gave 4 stars only cause it’s closed. Directly off the road- so expect road noise. 0 bars TMobile. Full bars LTE Verizon.

Nothing beats free, but some free spots are definitely better than others: Hope valley dispersed campground delivers on almost everything on my list. I have very low ground clearance (Mazda van) and AWD, so I cannot go too far off road. The campsites are located along a short gravel road right off the highway. Google took me straight there! The gravel road has some dips and rocks but if you go slow, anyone can make it. The campsites are clean and almost all provide good shade for the entire day, and best of all- VERY QUIET! I arrived on a Friday afternoon and had no troubles finding a spot, and despite other families coming in with their RVs or ATVs, they went to play elsewhere and so the campground is mostly quiet. No toilets, must come prepared and pack in-pack out. Reasonable cell service. Calls and texts are fine, with between 2-3 bars of Verizon network. Internet can be slow or fail to load occasionally, so not great for digital nomads, Best of all, you are only a 30 min drive to “civilization”, whether that’s in Tahoe or across the state line to Carson City Nevada. Target, Walmart, Trader Joe’s even,, anything you need to refuel is within 30mins of the campsite. No fires right now due to fire restrictions. Ranger drives thru campsite couple times a day and makes sure no one has any fires going.

Nothing beats free! It was a great dispersed camping site but so dark at night. Bring a flashlight! I would come again. It was hard to find though. Use pictures of the mountain and entrance to identify it.

We stayed here while visiting Lake Tahoe. Don’t confuse this with Hope Valley Campground, this space is free. It’s forest service land so no real “designated” sites. You find a spot that works for you and use it. We were able to choose a large and private space for our van and it was one of our favorite sites on our five week road trip. Beautiful surroundings and trees, some shade, and plenty of places to hang hammocks. Nobody bothered us here. Some sites large enough for RVs and lots of tent campers. We left our tent up and a few other things while we went to the lake, twice, and they were untouched when we returned. About a half hour from Tahoe. Making it super convenient as well. Lots of the spots have stone fire pits made by previous campers. Probably a good idea t put fires out before bed due to dry climate. Very quick detour off main road, easy access. We loved it.

We wanted a free place in the forest, and this was just off the road. It was quiet, and there were tons of spots. Although we thought there were a lot of bugs, my family would stay here again. We felt safe, and it wasn’t too bad a drive into South Lake Tahoe. We were traveling with a 22ft trailer.

Right off a paved road and there are many spots tucked in the woods. Was a nice quiet place.

We usually stay down the road at the dispersed camping area but it was very busy on the Sunday of Memorial weekend, so we stopped here for the night (arrived ~2 pm). Only 3 other small campers here (all had stayed the night before) but 2 left after we arrived. Fairly level large enough paved parking lot that a class A towing came in to give their dog some exercise and left. We love Hope Valley and the views here are amazing as is the walk to/along the river! Very peaceful overnight (could hear some traffic on hwy 88 during the day but hardly any traffic at night). Vaulted toilets on site were open but no trash recepticle so pack out (we picked up trash around the toilets to take with us).

We arrived about 8 pm on 5/5/21 based on info that site is open year around but found the gates locked, so we just parked for quick overnight outside the gate. Another car of capers arrived a bit later and expressed disappointment of site being closed and left. Another camper arrived about 11 pm and pitched a tent across the road for quick overnight. We all left by early morning. Check status before you go!

Great spot with plenty of sites to choose from. There can be many people here and spread out. Road is a bit bumpy on the way in, just go slow.

Cute tree lined foothill next to open meadow with river access a short hike away. Plenty of dispersed sites that can accommodate any rig of any size. Lots of people and sometimes fairly close, but you still retain decent privacy. Very loud group of fifth wheelers the weekend we were there, but they settled down after 2230. No water nor electrical nor dump, haphazard cell service. Would definitely camp here again.
