Platbos Forest Cabins is a highly recommended property for self catering in Gansbaai for tourists visiting the Cape Overberg region.

About Platbos Forest Cabins
Platbos Forest offers self catering accommodation in an indigenous forest found on the Baviaanspoort Hills in Gansbaai. This ancient forest has trees that date back over a 1000 years in age. This endangered and rare ecosystem is one of a kind and certainly worth the visit. This exclusive forest camp means that guests can enjoy the forest area all to themselves. As the accommodation is off the grid there are no electrical appliances. Gas for cooking and crockery for six persons per unit is available. Should you require more, please bring this along. A communal freezer is available at reception and there is an outdoor fireplace. Bush Buck Suite (sleeps 2) This is an open plan bedroom with a sitting area, kitchen and an indoor fireplace. All linen, towels and bedding are provided. Honey Bee Suite (sleeps 2) The suite offers a double bed with a mosquito net, all linen, towels and bedding. The walls of the bedroom are canvas blinds that can be rolled up as desired. There is a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, cutlery and crockery. Forest Camp (sleeps 4) The camp has two tented units with two single beds each. All linen and towels are provided. There is a fully equipped kitchen. The Forest Camp provides cutlery and crockery for four guests. The Olive Cabin (sleeps 3) The Olive Cabin is the perfect getaway for couples or a small family of three (two adults and one child or one adult and two kids). The Forest Camp is ideal for a get away surrounded by nature. We were pleasantly surprised with how well kitted everything was from the tents to the kitchen area. Will definitely be back.

I’m reluctant to leave a glowing review only because I want to keep this treasure of a place to myself! A beautiful forest, and your cabin is plopped right in the middle of it. We had absolute peace. Little details - the gift of a tree, a poitjie pot, a sharp knife in the kitchen and a wheel barrow to transport your belongings through the forest - made our stay at Platbos a pleasure. Best shower in the country. Thank you!

We stayed at Old Olive Cabin. Unfortunately, we had it in our minds from the beginning (our mistake) that Old Olive Cabin was actually the Bushbuck Suite, so our excitement was dampened when we saw the small cabin, instead of the lovely open-air cabin we had expected! We quickly got over this slight disappointment and settled in. In general, our stay was very pleasant. The cabin is slightly cramped and the styling is not to our more modern taste, but it is very well equipped. The outdoor shower was our absolute favourite part, and the hammock came a close second. Nothing wrong with the outdoor loo either. Baboons came for a visit on several occasions which was actually very exciting. We had one BIG male literally stand up and press his face against the kitchen window, which was a bit of a surprise, but he moved off very quickly once he spotted us. Unfortunately, the complete peace and quiet we had expected was not there for some of the time. On Friday night, we heard loud music playing until late (can only assume coming from the property that is just above the parking spot from the cabin?). We also heard two gunshots during our stay, not sure whether this was some people chasing away baboons? It was unfortunate to have the serenity of the forest disrupted. I believe that there also needs to be more clarity in terms of where the freezer and extra wood are located. The Info Hut says it contains these, but it does not. When you arrive at the cabin, you are in fact told that the freezer and extra wood are located in another hut on the complete opposite side of the property (too inconveniently far to walk to, considering that you are not allowed to drive there). We would suggest making this clearer for guests. In addition, the later directions for the alternative route could have been made a little clearer. They just state, "After about 6.5 km, take a gravel road to your left". Perhaps include in the description a defining feature that guests can look out for, as there are several gravel roads leading off from the tar road. A note about the forest. Please do not expect this to be similar to the large, spectacular forests with plenty of tall trees like what you will find in the Garden Route forests. Platbos comprises mainly smaller, dense vegetation with the odd large tree every here and there. Still nice, but just making this clear for guests. All in all, thank you for a nice stay.
