Matjiesvlei Guest Farm

Matjiesvlei Farm
Calitzdorp, Karoo
Afrique du Sud

Matjiesvlei Guest Farm is a highly recommended property for self catering in Calitzdorp for tourists visiting the Karoo region.

About Matjiesvlei Guest Farm
Come visit Matjiesvlei - the gem of the Little Karoo. Matjiesvlei is a must see when visiting the Klein Karoo. Come and enjoy the serene and tranquil beauty of this valley, situated at the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains between Calitzdorp and Ladismith. Farming in this area dates back as far as 1821. We offer you a peaceful, relaxing stay in one of our four self catering units: Douglas-huis, Thiart-huis, Cloete-huis and Huis Oppie Rant. If you prefer being even closer to nature you can unwind at our camping site, Die Dam Rivier Kamp (the Dam River Camp), situated on the shores of the Gamka River. Oupad se Kloof (Sleeps 4): This unit consists of one bedroom with a double bed and one single bed, a bathroom with shower and another spacious room containing the kitchen, dining room and an extra single bed (ideal for children). The unit is fully equipped and has electricity. Thiart Huis (Sleeps 6): This tastefully decorated cottage has 3 bedrooms and can accommodate 6 persons Two of the bedrooms each have a double bed while the third room has both a double and a single bed. Stunning views of river and mountains. Without electricity but fully equipped with candles and lamps. Gas stove, fridge/freezer and donkey-boiler for hot water. This is an angler’s paradise, with a wide variety of fish species including Yellow fish, Black bass, Eel and Carp. There are also fantastic water holes perfect for swimming and rowing. The Bôjaankop 4x4 route takes you to the top of Bôjaankop from where you can enjoy stunning views of the Little Karoo. The trail runs through and along the Gamka river with spectacular views. The river crossings can be very interesting especially when the river runs high. For most of the trail you need low range, but the trail is people and vehicle friendly and is great fun and a tremendous experience for the whole family. Like photographer, Richard van Ryneveld said 'A truly beautiful area, Matjiesvlei a hidden and undiscovered gem in the Klein Karoo.' It is easy to get to – approximately 13 km out of Calitzdorp (15 minutes drive) and only 3 – 4 hours from Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. For the mountains bikers can also enjoy most of the trail. We find that lots of people also like to hike on the route. Matjiesvlei is conveniently located for day trips to Oudtshoorn with all its tourist attractions, The Garden Route, Die Hel (Gamkaskloof) and beautiful mountain passes in the area. It was a great journey into the past! Middle in pure natur an old farmhouse built about 1900 with astonishing details. We admire the people who build it and maintained it thereafter.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay at "Huis oppie Rant" in the +100 year old homestead. Selma and Bennie Nel are very accommodating and willing to help with any request. As Bennie is 5th generation here in the valley, he has many enthralling tales to tell about how life was here many years ago. The views and the silence makes one feel rested and at peace with the World. It is great to be subjected to paraffin lamps and candles for light and to heat water in a Donkey Boiler. We WILL be back to camp.... when it is warmer.
