Normally, residents of the European Union can travel freely between the 26 European countries that are part of the Schengen area. This means that you can cross the border without having to show your passport or identity card. During the corona pandemic, many Schengen countries introduced border controls to prevent the spread of the virus.

Not long ago, most countries abandoned these controls, but now Austria, Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden have reintroduced them. This time it is not because of corona, but because of the war in Ukraine. The countries concerned believe that there is a risk of weapons and/or persons entering the EU that could pose a threat.

Where are the border controls?

Now you naturally want to know at which border crossings the checks take place. The ANWB has made a nice list:

Austria:
At the border with Hungary and Slovakia.

Denmark:
To
be determined, but possibly at all borders and at the ferry connection to Germany and Sweden.

Germany:
At the border with Austria.

Norway:
At the ferry connection to Denmark, Germany and Sweden.

Sweden:
To be determined, but possible at all borders.
